देव-माता अदिति
ऋग्वेद-संहिता के चौथे मण्डल के अठारहवें सूत्र को पाँचवों, छठी और सातवीं ऋचायें अदिति की बनाई हुई हैं । यह अदिति इन्द्रदेव की माता के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हैं। इनकी कथा बड़ी कवितामय है।
पुराणों में लिखा है कि आदिति भगवान कश्यप की स्त्री और इन्द्रादि देवताओं की माता थीं। इनकी सौत दिति के वंश में राक्षस पैदा हुए, जो एक समय बड़े जबरदस्त हो गये थे। उनमें से प्रह्लाद के पोते, विरोचन के पुत्र, राजा बलि ने विश्वजित नामक यज्ञ करके स्वर्ग का भी राज्य-पद प्राप्त कर लिया था। तब देवताओं को स्वर्ग से निकाल दिया गया और वे बड़ी कठिनाई में पड़ गये । देवताओं की यह दुर्दशा देखकर देवमाता अदिति को बड़ा दुःख हुआ और इसके निवारण का उपाय ढूँढने के लिए उन्होंने मन-ही-मन अपने स्वामी का स्मरण किया। भगवान कश्यप ने कहा, पयोव्रत का उद्यापन करके विष्णु की आराधना करो। तदनुसार एकाग्र चित्त होकर अदिति ने उसे किया। इसपर प्रसन्न होकर विष्णुजी ने वामनावतार के रूप में इनके गर्भ से जन्म लिया।
वामन उपनयन (यज्ञोपवीत-संस्कार) के समय भीख मांगने के लिए बलि के पास गये । बलि प्रसिद्ध दानी था, उसने कहा, जो कुछ माँगना हो माँगो । वागन-रूपी भगवान ने सिर्फ तीन कदम जमीन माँगी । दानी बलि ने इस बात को तुरन्त स्वीकार कर लिया। तब भगवान ने अपने बौने शरीर को एकदम महाविशाल बना लिया। उन्हे तीन पग धरती लेनी थी। एक पग में तो उन्होंने पृथ्वी को नाप लिया, दूसरे पग में स्वर्ग तथा चाँद-सूरज-तारों-समेत सारे आकाश को नापा, और तीसरे पग के लिए स्थान बाकी नहीं ही रहा ! तब बलि बड़ा चकित हुआ । वह सोचने लगा- 'स्वर्ग और मृत्युलोक पर तो वामन ने कब्जा कर लिया और अपने वचन की पूत्ति के लिए अभी तीसरा पग बाकी ही है; पर अब अपने पास है ही क्या, जिसपर उन्हे तीसरा पग रखने दिया जाय ?' वह जान गया कि भगवान ने मुझे छकाया है। अतः विवश होकर उसने अपना मस्तक झुका दिया और कहा- "प्रभु । यह मेरा सिर है, इसपर आप अपना तीसरा पग रखिए।" स्वर्ग और मृत्युलोक का तो वह दान कर ही चुका था, तब उसे वहाँ खड़े रहने का हक भी क्या था ? इसलिए वह पाताल में चला गया और देवताओं को फिर से स्वर्ग का राज्य मिल गया।
वामदेव ऋषि ने एक बार अपनी माता को सताया था; इसपर वह अदिति और इन्द्रदेव के पास चली आई थी। कहते हैं कि इसपर कुछ मन्त्र रचकर अदिति ने वामदेव को खूब फटकारा था। अदिति के एक श्लोक का आशय इस प्रकार है- "जलवती नदियाँ हर्षसूचक कलकल शब्द करती हुई चली जाती है। हे ऋषि । तुम उनसे पूछो तो कि वे क्या कहती है ?"

Aditi, the Mother of the Gods
The fifth, sixth, and seventh verses of the eighteenth sutra of the fourth mandal of the Rigveda Samhita are attributed to Aditi. This Aditi is famous as the mother of Lord Indra. Her story is very poetic.
The Puranas state that Aditi was the wife of Lord Kashyapa and the mother of the gods, including Indra. Her co-wife Diti's lineage produced demons who once became very powerful. Among them, King Bali, the son of Virochana, the grandson of Prahlad, performed a yajna called Vishvajit and attained the throne of heaven. The gods were then expelled from heaven and faced great hardship. Seeing the plight of the gods, Aditi, the Mother of the Gods, was deeply saddened and, seeking a solution, silently invoked her husband. Lord Kashyapa instructed her to perform the Paayovrata (the fasting ceremony) and worship Vishnu. Aditi, with a concentrated mind, performed the ritual. Pleased with this, Lord Vishnu was born from her womb in the form of Vamana.
Vamana went to Bali to beg for alms during the Upanayana ceremony (sacred thread ceremony). Bali was a renowned donor and said, "Ask for whatever you want." The chariot-like god asked for just three steps of land. The generous Bali readily accepted. Then the god transformed his dwarf form into a gigantic giant. He had to take three steps of land. In one step, he measured the earth, in the second, he measured the heaven and the entire sky, including the moon, sun, and stars. There was no room left for the third step! Bali was astonished. He thought, "Vamana has conquered heaven and the earth, and he still has the third step left to fulfill his promise. But what do we have now that we can allow him to place his third step on?" He realized that God had deceived him. Helplessly, he bowed his head and said, "Lord, this is my head. Place your third step on it." He had already donated heaven and earth, so what right did he have to stand there? So he went to the underworld, and the gods regained the kingdom of heaven.
Vamadeva Rishi once harassed his mother; she went to Aditi and Indradev. It is said that Aditi, after composing some mantras, rebuked Vamadeva. The meaning of one of Aditi's verses is: "The flowing rivers flow with a joyful gurgling sound. O sage, ask them what they say."
