शश्वती - पति-पत्नी-सम्बन्ध की व्याख्याता
ब्रह्मवादिनी रोमशा की तरह शश्वती भी वेद की एक ऋचा की ऋषिका हैं। कहते है कि यह अङ्गिरा ऋषि की कन्या और आसङ्ग राजा की पत्नी थीं। ऋग्वेद के आठवें मण्डल के पहले सूक्त की 34 वीं ऋचा इनकी रची हुई है। रोमशा की भाँति शश्वती भी बुद्धि का हीं नाम है। जो जीवात्मा के साथ चिरकाल तक क़ायम रहे उस बुद्धि को शश्वती कहने है।
शश्वती पति से कहती है :-"स्वामिन् ' आप सुशोभित भोजन अपने पास रखते हैं। भोजन का टुकड़ा आपके आगे पड़ा दीखता है। यह भोजन स्थिर है, इसका क्षय कभी नही होता । यह बड़ा विस्तीर्ण और ईश्वर की ओर झुका हुआ है, इससे आपके पास बहुत-सा भोजन दिखाई दे रहा है।"
इस ऋचा की टोका करते हुए एक विद्वान ने लिखा है कि आत्मा को सम्बोधन करके यह ऋचा लिखो गई है। आत्मा के सामने अनेक भोजन है। आत्मा के पास विविध प्रकार के अक्षय भोजन न होते, तो भला पुरुष आत्म-रत, आत्म-क्रीड़, कैसे बनता ? और आत्मा से विविध पदार्थ लेकर हीं तो बुद्धि ज्ञान का प्रसार करती है। ऋषिका शश्वती इस दृष्टान्त के द्वारा ज्ञान-प्रचार करती थी। बुद्धि से ही आत्मा की शोभा है, बुद्धि में विकार होने से आत्मा मलिन हो जाती है; बुद्धि जितनी पवित्र होगी आत्मा भी उतनी ही शुद्ध और पवित्र रहेगी। जिस प्रकार आत्मा के बगैर बुद्धि नहीं और बुद्धि के विना आत्मा नहीं, उसी प्रकार पति-पत्नी का पारस्परिक सम्बन्ध भी होना चाहिए। स्त्री की शोभा पति और पति की शोभा स्त्री है। बुद्धि और आत्मा में जैसे कोई भेद नहीं, दोनों वास्तव में एक ही है, वैसे ही पति-पत्नी को भी अभेदमार्गी होकर संसार में रहना चाहिए। अपना पति चाहे जैसा निर्धन हो, तो भी पत्नी को तो यही भाव रखना चाहिए कि उसके पास अटूट धन है, तरह-तरह के स्वादिष्ट खाद्य पदार्थ उसके सामने पड़े हुए है। ऐसा ही गृढ उपदेश इस ऋचा में भरा हुआ है और ब्रह्मवादिनी शश्वती का स्त्रियों को यही उपदेश है।

Like the Brahmavadini Romsha, Shaswati is also a sage of a verse in the Vedas. It is said that she was the daughter of the sage Angira and the wife of King Asanga. The 34th verse of the First Sukta of the Eighth Mandala of the Rigveda is composed by her. Like Romsha, Shaswati is also the name of the intellect. The intellect that remains with the soul for a long time is called Shaswati.
Shaswati says to her husband: "Swami, you keep beautiful food with you. A piece of food appears to be lying before you. This food is stable, it never decays. It is vast and inclined towards God, so you appear to have plenty of food."
Rebutting this verse, a scholar has written that this verse is addressed to the soul. The soul has abundant food before it. If the soul did not have a variety of inexhaustible food, how could a person become self-absorbed and self-indulgent? And it is only by drawing from the soul various substances that the intellect spreads knowledge. Sage Shaswati used this parable to spread knowledge. The soul is adorned by the intellect; impurities in the intellect make the soul impure. The purer the intellect, the purer and purer the soul will be. Just as there is no intellect without the soul, and no soul without the intellect, so too should the relationship between husband and wife be. A woman's beauty lies in her husband, and a husband's beauty lies in his wife. Just as there is no difference between the mind and the soul; both are truly one, similarly, husband and wife should live in this world without any difference. No matter how poor her husband is, a wife should always feel that he has unlimited wealth and a variety of delicious foods lying before her. This verse is filled with such profound advice, and this is the advice of Brahmavadini Shaswati to women.
