Tapati - Sun's Daughter and Savitri's Younger Sister.

This learned woman was the daughter of Sun God and Savitri's younger sister. Tapati was a woman devoted to asceticism, earning her praise throughout the three worlds. Another name for Sun God is Tapandev. Just as Tapandev was handsome, his daughter was also exceptionally beautiful. At that time, no celestial, demonic, sacrificial, Gandharva, or other girl was as beautiful as Tapati. Tapati's two eyes were large. Every limb, every part of her body, was soft and perfect. Sun God began searching for a handsome, virtuous, well-mannered, and learned husband to match this extremely beautiful, virtuous, and virtuous girl, but he found no suitable one. Gradually, the girl began to reach full maturity. Seeing this, Sun God became worried for her. She considered many suitors, but none appealed to her. During this time, King Sambaran of Kurukshetra, the son of a sage, was worshipping the Sun. The humble Pauravanandan Sambaran, bathing and purifying himself, would worship the Sun with a concentrated mind. Through austerities, fasting, vows, rituals, and offerings, he remained absorbed in the devotion and worship of the Sun God day and night. Seeing King Sambaran so grateful, knowledgeable about Dharma, and exceptionally handsome, the Sun God thought that if there was any suitor worthy of Tapati, it was King Sambaran. He resolved in his mind to marry Tapati to Sambaran.

Just as the diwakar sun illuminates the entire sky with its light, the influence of King Sambaran's virtues was spreading across the Earth. Just as Brahmins worship the Sun as soon as it rises, so too did Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and other subjects worship King Samvaran. With his valor and courtesy, this king had subdued many other kings. The Sun God decided to marry his beloved and virtuous daughter to such a virtuous man.

One day, it so happened that the mighty King Sambaran went hunting in a forest near the mountain. There, his matchless horse died from hunger and thirst while chasing the prey. The king, saddened, sat down under a tree. His gaze fell upon a beautiful woman with wide eyes. Seeing the extremely beautiful woman alone in the desolate forest, the king gazed intently at her. Her radiance was like the flame of a fire, her charm like the moon. Her face was radiant with joy. Standing on the mountain, she appeared as if she were a divine statue. Slowly he moved forward and addressing the beautiful girl said- "O beautiful girl! Why do you wander alone in this deserted forest? You are beautiful in every aspect; then what about your body You are beautiful in every aspect; you are adorned with precious jewels and clothes. I cannot understand whether you are a celestial or a demonic, a Yaksha or a Naga, a Gandharva or a human, or who you are. O beautiful one! Of all the women I have seen or heard of in my life, not a single one can match your beauty. O Charuvaadne! Seeing your face, as graceful as a lotus leaf and more beautiful than the moon, the pain of Kama is tormenting me."

Hearing such words of affection and praise repeatedly from the lustful King Sambaran, the beautiful girl vanished like lightning in the clouds. This beauty was none other than the daughter of the Sun God, Tapasi. Upon her sudden disappearance, the king frantically searched for her everywhere. When he could not find her even after a long search, he sat down and wept profusely. He even lost consciousness.

When the king fell unconscious to the ground, the lotus-eyed Tapasi reappeared and, appearing before the lustful king, smiled and said in sweet words, "King! Get up. May God bless you. You are the renowned king of the earth; you should not suddenly succumb to such infatuation."

Tapati's sweet words and affectionate care lifted the king's unconsciousness, and he gazed at the beautiful woman. For a while, he silently drank in the nectar of her beauty. Then he said, "O tender-bodied one! Driven by lust, I worship you every moment. Please fulfill my desire, for without you, my life is taken away. Love is tormenting me for you; and it cannot be appeased in any other way. O cheerful, beautiful one! The serpent of lust is stinging me. O Sumukhi! Protect me from the deadly poison of this cobra. My life is now in your hands. It is impossible for me to live without you. Love is tormenting me immensely. Please be kind to me. I am your devotee, therefore you should not abandon me. You must establish a bond of love with me and grant me life." Because the moment I saw you, love surged in my heart, and it is making my conscience restless. O Kalyani! After seeing your beauty, I no longer have the desire to even look at any other woman in the three worlds. I now take refuge in you. Please be pleased and satisfy this devotee who has come to you for refuge. Ever since I saw you, the god of love has been piercing my heart with his sharp arrows. My body is burning with the fire of lust. Douse this fire with the water of your love. Remove the unbearable pain that the god of love is inflicting on me, by giving yourself to him. O beautiful one! Marry me through Gandharva marriage; for among all marriages, Gandharva marriage is the best."

Tapati replied, "King! My father is present. So if you love me, please tell him about it. O King! Just as I have captivated you, you have captivated me with your mere sight. O best of kings! Women are not independent. I did not come to you because I lacked control over my own body. Otherwise, what woman would not desire to marry a people-loving king whose nobility is renowned throughout the world? Therefore, finding an opportune moment, please my father Aditya with penance, worship, and the observance of the rules of Yama and Niyama, and then tell him about me. If my father agrees to give me in marriage to you, I will forever remain under your control. O Kshatriya! My name is Tapati. I am the daughter of the Sun, the illuminator of the entire universe, and the younger sister of Savitri."

With this, Tapati immediately left. King Sambaran fell to the ground again. When the king, who had come hunting, was quite late, his companions came searching for him in this desolate forest. They found the king lying on the ground, like Airavata the elephant. Seeing this, all the king's well-wishers were filled with worry. But somehow, calming their hearts and using various remedies, they brought the lustful king back to his senses and raised him from the ground. The king's minister was very old, learned, experienced, and devoted to his master. He comforted the king with kind words, saying, "O Purupsingh, may you be well! Do not be afraid of anything." Seeing the king, who had slain numerous enemies on the battlefield, lying on the ground like this, the minister assumed he must be suffering from hunger and thirst. So, he poured fragrant, cool water on the king's head. This revived the king. After this, the king sent everyone away except the minister.

With the king's permission, the entire army departed. Then the king climbed the mountain again, bathed, cleansed himself, and stood with folded hands, worshipping the Sun God. At this time, he also remembered Sage Vasishtha. After the king had stood in one place for twelve days and nights, Sage Vasishtha, through his yogic powers, realized that the king had fallen in love with Tapati and that his heart was being pierced by the arrows of lust. He spoke to the king with loving words, comforting him, and promised to secure Tapati for him.

After bidding farewell to the king, the ascetic Vasishtha Muni went to the sky to meet the Sun God. Standing before him with folded hands, he lovingly said, "I am Vasishtha." The mighty Sun God replied, "O great sage! May your arrival be auspicious. Tell me, what do you want? O great soul! Whatever you ask of me, no matter how difficult it may be, I will surely give it to you. I will certainly fulfill your wish." Vasishtha bowed and said, "O Sun! I request you to marry Tapati, your daughter younger than Savitri, to King Sambaran. This king is very famous, knowledgeable about religion, and generous. In my opinion, no one could be more suitable for your daughter." The Sun God accepted the sage's request and agreed to marry Tapati to King Sambaran. He spoke respectfully to the sage, "O sage! King Sambaran is the best of kings, and Tapati is also the best of women. Therefore, what could be more joyous than the union of these two illustrious suitors?" After this, the Sun God sent Tapati to King Sambaran along with Vasishtha.

Vasishtha departed with Tapati and arrived at the place where King Sambaran of the Puru dynasty was performing penance. The lustful King Sambaran was immersed in Tapati's meditation; therefore, seeing Tapati approaching with the sage from afar, he was delighted. Just as lightning from the sky illuminates all directions, the lotus-eyed Tapati descended from the sky, spreading the same splendor with the radiance of her divine radiance. Vasishtha remained there until the king's twelve-night penance was complete. Thus, through austerities and worship of the Sun God, and with the recommendation of Vasishtha, King Samvarana obtained Tapati as his wife. Following Vasishtha's instructions, he solemnly married Tapati on this beautiful mountain. Entrusting all the affairs of the city, kingdom, vehicles, and army to his minister, he himself resided on this beautiful mountain to enjoy his company. After bidding farewell to the king, Vasishtha departed to his hermitage. King Samvarana and Tapati wandered from place to place with great love.

For twelve years, they indulged in various kinds of playful pastimes on this beautiful mountain. This displeased Indra. He stopped the rain in the king's capital and throughout his kingdom. Due to this cessation of rain, humans, animals, and birds began dying, and the people were plunged into great distress. Distressed by hunger and thirst, the people began to flee. The entire country was filled with starving and frail people, making it seem like a haunted place inhabited by ghosts. When the virtuous sage Vasishtha witnessed the plight of King Sambarana's kingdom, he was deeply saddened and focused on reforming it. He brought the king, who had been indulging in pleasures with Tapati for many days, back to the capital.

When King Sambarana returned to his city, Indra was pleased and the rains resumed as before. The people were also delighted. Thereafter, just as Indra had performed the yajna with Indrani, King Sambarana also performed the yajna with Tapati for twelve years. Tapati always assisted her husband in all religious activities and, using her wisdom and wisdom, provided the king with useful advice on numerous occasions.

King Kuru was born from Tapati's womb, and his descendants were the Kauravas and Pandavas. The entire Kaurava clan was proud of Tapati's virtues. That is why in the Mahabharata, Vyasa addressed the mighty warrior Arjuna as "Tapaty," meaning Tapati's son.
