वाक् - अद्वैतवाद की मूल-जननी
वाक् असृण ऋषि की कन्या थीं । ऋग्वेद-संहित के दसवें मण्डल के 125 वें सूक्त के आठ मंत्र इन्होंने रचे थे, जो देवीसूक्त के नाम से मशहूर हैं। आज हमारे देश मे जगह-जगह जो चण्डी-पाठ होता है, पूर्वकाल में उसकी जगह इस देवीसूक्त का ही प्रचार था।
मार्कण्डेय पुराण के चण्डी-माहात्म्य-प्रकरण में, वाकू-प्रणीत इन आठ मंत्रों के भाव-विषयक विस्तृत वर्णन है। चण्डी-माहात्म्य के साथ-साथ आज भी भारत-भर में इस वाक्देवी का माहात्म्य गाया जाता है। संसार में अद्वैतवाद के प्रवर्तक के रूप मे श्री शङ्कराचार्य प्रसिद्ध हैं, पर वादेवी ने उनके जन्म से अनेक वर्ष पहले ही अद्वैतवाद के उन मूल सिद्धान्तों का प्रचार कर दिया था जिस मत के आधार पर शङ्कराचार्य ब्राह्मण-धर्म को पुनर्जीवित कर सके, सच पूछो तो वह मत उनका अपना नहीं प्रत्युत् उसकी मूल जननी वाक् देवी हैं। अतः इस महत्व के लिए हम शङ्कराचार्य का जो सन्मान करते हैं, उसकी बहुत कुछ पात्र वास्तव में वादेवी (वाक् देवी) ही हैं।
वाक्देवी अपने रचे हुए श्लोक में कहती हैं :-
"मै रुद्र, वसु सबकी आत्मारूप होकर विचरण करती हूँ। मित्र और वरुण, इन्द्र और अग्नि एवं अश्विनीद्वय को मै ही धारण करती हूँ। सारे भारत के स्त्री-रत्न जगत् की मैं ईश्वरी (अधिष्ठात्री) हूँ। अनेकानेक प्राणी मुझमे समाविष्ट है। जीव जो कुछ सुनता है, प्राण धारण करता है, अथवा आहार करता है, वह सब मेरे ही द्वारा होता है। देवता और मनुष्य मेरी ही सेवा करते है। में ही समस्त कामनाओ को पूर्ण करती हूँ। लोगो को मैं स्रष्टा, ऋषि अथवा बुद्धिमान् बना सकती हूँ। स्तोत्रो के द्वेषी और हिंसको के वध के लिए रुद्र के धनुष में मैं ही पिरोई गई थी। भक्तो के उपकार के लिए उनके दुश्मनों से मैने ही युद्ध किया है। स्वर्ग और पृथ्वी में प्रविष्ट होकर मैं हीं रहीं हूँ। इस भूलोक पर आच्छादित आकाश को मैने हीं बनाया है। वायु जिस प्रकार स्वेच्छा-पूर्वक चलती है, अखिल विश्व को उत्पन्न करनेवाली में भी उसी प्रकार अपनी इच्छानुसार ही सब काम करती हूँ। जो कुछ पैदा हुआ है, वह सब मेरे अपने ही माहात्म्य से हुआ है।"

Vak Devi - the mother of monism
Vak was the daughter of sage Asrin. He had composed eight mantras of the 125th Sukta of the tenth Mandal of the Rig Veda, which is famous by the name of Devi Sukta. Today in our country, instead of Chandi-path being recited at many places, in earlier times this Devi Sukta was preached only.
In the Chandi-Mahatmya-Prakaran of Markandeya Purana, there is a detailed description of the feelings of these eight Vaku-inspired mantras. Along with the greatness of Chandi, even today the greatness of this Vakdevi is sung all over India. Sri Shankaracharya is renowned worldwide as the founder of Advaita philosophy, but Vadevi, many years before his birth, had propagated the fundamental principles of Advaita philosophy, on the basis of which Shankaracharya was able to revive Brahminism. In fact, that philosophy is not his own; rather, its original mother is Vadevi (Vak Devi). Therefore, the respect we bestow upon Shankaracharya for this significance is largely due to Vadevi (Vak Devi).
In a verse composed by her, Vakdevi says:
"I roam about as the soul of Rudra and the Vasus. I bear Mitra and Varuna, Indra and Agni, and the two Ashvins. I am the presiding deity of the entire female world of India. Numerous beings are contained within me. Whatever a living being hears, breathes, or eats, it all happens through me. Gods and humans serve me. I fulfill all desires. I can make people creators, sages, or wise. I was strung on Rudra's bow to slay the enemies and predators of the hymns. I have fought against the enemies of the devotees for the benefit of them. I have entered heaven and earth and lived there. I have created the sky that covers this earth. Just as the wind blows at will, so too do I exercise my will in the creator of the entire universe. I do everything according to my will. Whatever has been created has been due to my own greatness."
